What's better on a Saturday morning in December? PANCAKES, STORIES, COLORING BOOKS, RAFFLES, FIRETRUCKS and SANTA! Today it was all that and more for the parents and children guests at the cabin. It was our popular annual 'Breakfast With Santa' event. HO HO HO to all!
'TEA TIME ON THE TRAIN' for 2021 was on Saturday, December 4, for 100 pampered guests supporting the Sandhills Woman's Exchange. It was perfect weather, beautiful china settings, attentive aproned waitresses, the Mayor and train Captain, raffle baskets, Junior orchestra music, hats, tea and desserts to take home. Special thanks to the Rotary Club of Pinehurst who delivered all the boxes of china to the train and picked them up again for storage.

Last night's 'Three Musketeers' silent movie with Douglas Fairbanks was a blast! There were ooohs, ahhs, snickers and outright laughter as the tinkling piano keys played steady, soft and dramatically throughout the film. Ron Layne of SCC introduced the film and gave SWE President a bottle of champagne and roses for our 100th. Our piano player, Nathan Shirley, earned a standing ovation for the two hour performance. Of course, guests posed with the three musketeers upon arriving. Fun night for the SWE!!!
Our First Lunch and Learn of the year was a huge success as we all learned about the Hope Diamond and, excitingly, the curse said to settle upon those who own it! Great lecture, great company, great food! Thanks to Dorothy Gibson for a fascinating presentation and to all the ladies who came to support us!
On Monday, May 17, the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange held their Annual Meeting at the Pinecrest Inn. A group of 48 guests and members of the Exchange arrived to enjoy a breakfast buffet followed by President, Barb Summers’ year review of 2020. Audrey Moriarty of Givens Library presented a talk about influential women in the early days of Pinehurst. Following her presentation, Summers presented her with an artisan pine straw basket gift. The 1810 historical cabin closed for the season on May 21 but will reopen on Wednesday, September 8, to premiere the 100th Year Celebration of the Exchange in 2022.
On Thursday, April 8, the Executive Director of the Sunrise Theater Mary Beth Poplyk presented all the facts and history of the popular Sunrise Theater in Southern Pines. A full Covid restricted audience of 17 enjoyed her talk, then asked questions before a Chef Katrina lunch and dessert.

League of Women Voters ordered 112 to go lunches for their Lunch with Legends Civic Scholarship fundraiser.

The Sandhills Woman’s Exchange hosted a special ‘Tea Time at the Cabin’ event on Sunday, December 13, at 15 Azalea Road. Due to CoVid 19 restrictions, the very popular Aberdeen Carolina & Western Railway Tea Time on the Train held last December was canceled this year. This year’s holiday event, sponsored by Victoria Adkins of Coldwell Banker Advantage Real Estate, was a sell out for the two limited seatings at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Adkins stated that the purpose of the event is to raise funds towards the purchase of a new commercial refrigerator for the kitchen.
Following the tea time with sweet and savory delicacies, guests checked their raffle tickets to win an assortment of gifts from local artisans and Village of Pinehurst shops. Since the Cabin has also skipped the popular Holiday Open House this year, the relaxed atmosphere encouraged guests to visit the gift shop.
The 1810 historical cabin’s mission statement continues to be ‘helping others help themselves.’ The SWE cabin closed on December 18 for the winter season. The reopening date will be Ground Hog Day, February 2, for the spring season. Volunteers are always welcome to assist in the Gift Shop, waitress in the Cabin Café, kitchen helper, or garden volunteer.
On Saturday, December 5, the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange hosted a ‘Breakfast With Santa’ event at the historical 1810 cabin. Sponsored by Martha Gentry Realty, the two seatings for the families were interrupted by the arrival of Santa in a firetruck. Chauffeured by Jamie Boles who owns the antique truck, Santa climbed down to greet the children and hear their Christmas list requests. Mrs. Santa was on hand to read Christmas stories during the breakfast and give each child a goodie bag of treats. Chef volunteers flipping the pancakes were Tony Elms and Jim Wiltjer.
The Sandhills Woman’s Exchange hosted a ‘sold out’ Lunch n’ Learn on October 8 featuring Faye Dasen of The Pilot. Due to CoVid restrictions, the event was scheduled outdoors in the garden of Cav Peterson. Participants enjoyed the talk and discussion of the newspaper which was first published on November 26, 1920. Picnic box lunches prepared by Chef Katrina were served following the speaker.
