Lunch ‘n Learn: Creating a Container Garden

The final Lunch N’ Learn of the season was held on April 25th. Dee Johnson, former coordinator of the Landscape Gardening program at Samdhills Community College, did a demonstration on “Creating a Container Garden”. Barbara Summers was the lucky winner of the drawing for the finished container. The event was sold out and attendees enjoyed a colorful and delicious lunch of a salad of spinach, apples, mandarin oranges and dried cranberries with a turkey roll topped with poppy seed dressing and a corn muffin. Dessert was lemon cake with a dollop of whip cream.

After two years as 2nd vice President arranging the programs each month, Dolores Muller will step down and Debbie Anderson will take over planning the monthly programs starting next season.

Lunch ‘n Learn: James Creek Cider House

The March Lunch N' Learn at the Sandhills Woman's Exchange featured a delightful presentation by Ann Marie Thornton owner of James Creek Cider House in Cameron. Attendees learned about the history of cider making. James Creek makes premium harvest-based ciders from Southern heirloom apple varieties and other fruits grown in their own orchards in Moore County. The talk was followed by a tasting of three ciders they produce and a delicious lunch by chef Katrina.

Loblolly Garden Club Spring Clean Up Day

Pinehurst Elementary Second Graders Visit the Cabin

Pinehurst Elementary Second Graders visited the Cabin on Monday, December 12th. The very well-behaved children were invited to think about what they were seeing in the front room, which originally was the full cabin. Faith Clay, SWE President, then asked them "What do you wonder about?" Mary Meier, the Cabin Manager, then told the children the story of the cabin, first as the home of a family, then a kitchen, then where a man lived there and tended to the deer in the surrounding forest. Finally, Mr. Tufts, Pinehurst founder< moved it to its current location. One hundred years ago, it became the Woman's Exchange, where women from the surrounding area came to sell their wares. The children were amazed that a whole family lived in just one room! One of them asked how the logs were held together, and there were many other interesting questions, and comments. The children walked single-file through the gift shop to see the many wonderful things available from the local artisans.

Log Cabin Tours

The Log Cabin & Gardens Tour on Saturday was a wonderful day of historical looks at eight area log cabins. We hope all enjoyed the tour, the dedicated docents, beautiful weather, raffle and complimentary desserts at the SWE cabin.

Rotary Club of Pinehurst Comes to the Exchange

On Friday, September 23, the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange hosted the Rotary Club of Pinehurst members at their ‘Table of Five Fridays’ monthly event. Shown left to right: Katy LaBare, Frank, Marois, Bill Schran, Deb Holmes, Fran Grandinetti and Susan Taylor-Schran.
In celebration of their 100th year as one of only 15 Exchanges remaining in the U.S., the SWE invites many community groups to enjoy a complimentary lunch. In the past, groups have included the Pinehurst Village Council, Pinehurst Police Dept., Pinehurst Fire Dept., the SCC President and staff, Howell Masonry, The Pilott, Pinehurst Public Services Dept., and First Health Nursing staff.

Every Fall, the Loblolly Garden Club members come to the SWE to do a ‘Labor of Love’ project of cleaning up our grounds before our reopening. It was obvious to the members that help WAS NEEDED because all the spring/summer rains had produced mega weeds and trimming work to be done. We called on Pinehurst Rotary Club to come join our crew on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 for the workday. With everyone’s help, the work was done and now the cabin is ready to be pretty on September 7, our reopening day!

Annual Meeting

The Sandhills Woman’s Exchange presented their Annual Meeting on Monday, May 9, at the Pinecrest Inn. Outgoing President Barb Summers previewed the 100th Centennial Year activities after the guests enjoyed a buffet breakfast. Nominating Chair Joyce Reehling presented the new slate of officers for the 2022-2023 year. Co-Presidents will be Faith Clay and Marie Carbrey.

WE WERE PROUD to host the Pinehurst Police Chief and a few of his officers for our monthly 'Table of Five Fridays' lunch. Our Board member and Artisan Chairman, Yvonne Gale, was the hostess and dessert provider for the group. All seemed to enjoy their own Chef Katrina lunch...and especially the applause from the cafe when they departed. Just another way we celebrate our 100th year in this vibrant community!
