On Saturday, December 5, the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange hosted a ‘Breakfast With Santa’ event at the historical 1810 cabin. Sponsored by Martha Gentry Realty, the two seatings for the families were interrupted by the arrival of Santa in a firetruck. Chauffeured by Jamie Boles who owns the antique truck, Santa climbed down to greet the children and hear their Christmas list requests. Mrs. Santa was on hand to read Christmas stories during the breakfast and give each child a goodie bag of treats. Chef volunteers flipping the pancakes were Tony Elms and Jim Wiltjer.

The Sandhills Woman’s Exchange hosted a ‘sold out’ Lunch n’ Learn on October 8 featuring Faye Dasen of The Pilot. Due to CoVid restrictions, the event was scheduled outdoors in the garden of Cav Peterson. Participants enjoyed the talk and discussion of the newspaper which was first published on November 26, 1920. Picnic box lunches prepared by Chef Katrina were served following the speaker. Watch for the November Lunch n’ Learn featuring Chef Katrina’s Thanksgiving Quiche recipe and preparation.

Tea Time on the train on December 8, 2019 was a huge success. Such a unique event with period costumes, tea in china teacups, and sandwiches and scones baked by the volunteers from the Sandhill Woman's Exchange Cabin.

While Santa was visiting at the Cabin on Saturday, four elves were cutting and sewing the gold shantung table runners for the ‘Tea Time on the Train’ event Dec. 8. Marie was the cutting elf and Caren, Estelle and Judie were the sewing elves. They finished 80 table runners to adorn the china, tea and culinary specials. Now that’s a Saturday Sewing Party!

The SWE Holiday Open House was Saturday evening, November 16, and what a huge success! Hundreds came for wine and cheese and shopping for gifts that were beautifully wrapped for free. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the fellowship! See you at the cabin again.

The Landscape Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was Wednesday, Oct. 30, at 10 a.m. Lorraine Tweed made a generous donation last year for a complete landscaping redo in memory of her husband, Bob.

Pinehurst, NC – On Wednesday, September 4, the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange will reopen for the 98th season. During this busy summer, the Board has implemented a new Point of Sale program, received new and favorite artisans into the refurbished gift shop, welcomed a new General Manager Nancy Bogan, and new landscaped gardens. The gardens are compliments of a generous donation in memory of Bob Tweed by his wife, Lorraine. A ribbon/flower cutting dedication of the gardens will be scheduled this fall.

A native of the New England area, Nancy Bogan is the new General Manager of the cabin. She and her husband have visited the Sandhills area for three years, fell in love, and have just moved to Pinehurst for good. Bogan recently left her career with TJX, the parent company for HomeGoods, Homesense, Marshalls, TJMaxx and Sierra Trading. During her 21 years with the company, she traveled extensively overseas to develop business partnerships in Italy, Portugal, Vietnam, India, Spain, Czech Republic and the UK. “I’m looking forward to the collaborating experience with all the members of the SWE team and helping to grow the interest in preserving the cabin history and outreach in the community,” she commented. Bogan is excited to live in Pinehurst where her interests include golf, gardening and DIY craft projects. “We’re looking forward to settling into our life here, making new friends and learning more about all that North Carolina has to offer.”

In addition to the new outside look and new GM, the new Artisan Chair, Leslie Smith, is sending out a call to all artisans who may be interested in displaying their goods at the SWE. A committee reviews the items submitted and once accepted, the artisan receives 60% of the selling price, and the cabin receives 40% for historical upkeep of the 1810 cabin. The consignment process accepts unique quality handcrafted items from both local and national crafters. All consignment items should be brought to the SWE in August beginning each Monday - Friday, from August 5- 12; and Tuesday – Friday, August 27 – 30. Times for the receipt of these items will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In September, the regular drop off dates stated in the online Artisan Packet will take effect. Several fall fundraising events are planned to include: a Sip & Paint on Sept 23 at Hollyhocks Art Gallery; craft events in October at the cabin; Santa Visit on Nov 23; and ‘Tea Time on the Train’ December 8. The Board members for the SWE non-profit year include Co-presidents Barb Summers and Marie Carbrey, Kathleen Causey, Anne Wright, Judie Wiggins, Elizabeth Toomey, Bev Reynolds, Patti Talton, and Leslie Smith. Advisors to the board include: Cav Peterson, Ron Rhody, Joyce Reehling, Amanda Jakl, Audrey Moriarty, John Strickland and Laurie Bogart Wiles.

Upon the reopening Sept. 4, the hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Chef Katrina lunches are served from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers are always welcome to help serve as a waitress, gift shop cashier or kitchen helpers. The Community Presbyterian Church members serve in a ‘One Great Day of Service’ for non-profits every April for the past 10 years or so. On Sunday, April 28, these energetic members came to the cabin to help clean-up, plant flowers, install an air conditioner and do general spring cleaning. Thank You from all our members, Board and guests who will see the results each day prior to our closing on May 18.

The March 21 Lunch n’ Learn program at the Sandhills Woman’s Exchange was presented by Jill Wicker Gooding, left, and Lisa Hammond. Both women’s lives are tied directly to the past through the builder of Pinehurst, Rassie E. Wicker. Telling stories of her great grandfather, Jill explained his arrival in 1902 to help build the Carolina Hotel, then soon became the full time carpenter for Mr. Tufts. He built many of the historical homes in Pinehurst and Lisa and her husband own Rassie Wicker’s 1923 historical home on Dundee Road. A full house enjoyed the stories, lunch and dessert by Chef Katrina at the cabin.
