Volunteer Spotlights

Marie Carbrey, Membership Chair

Marie CarbreyWhen did you join the SWE?After retiring and moving to Pinehurst from Greenville, SC., I joined in 2014 as a waitress.

What prompted you to join?
On a visit to Pinehurst prior to moving, I had lunch in the Café and was served by Judy Boyer, whose enthusiasm sparked my interest.

How have you volunteered over the years?
Immediately upon becoming a member, Cav Petersen interested me in the need to save the SWE and the Cabin. Her passion and the dedication of others lead me take on more roles. I was Vice-President with Cav for 2 years, Co-President with Cav for 1 year, Co-President with Barb Summers for 2 years, and now membership chair.

Your thoughts for the future?
To stay involved and get more people involved. Since the Covid outbreak, several of the Women's Exchanges nationwide have closed, leaving just 15. It's a challenge during good times to stay open, and even more so for us now. The SWE is an historic part of Pinehurst, going back to its earliest foundings, and its mission of helping others help themselves needs to remain an intergal part of our community.
